The U.S. PowerBall, and MegaMillions.
Written by Yaron Peretz
The U.S. PowerBall and MegaMillions lotteries are the two largest lotteries in the United States. Luckily, today you don’t have to be in America to have your shot at winning one of these prestige Jackpots – all you need is Lancellot.
Personally, I’m a big fan of history; so I thought it’d be a good idea to inform you, the reader, on the stories of how these two awesome lotteries began, and how they’ve arrived at their super-status today.
Let’s start with the PowerBall:
The PowerBall launched in 1992, and actually began under the name ‘Lotto America’. It is operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), a non-profit organization formed by an agreement with U.S. lotteries.
The game expanded over the years, adding more states to its jurisdiction and increasing the size of its jackpot prizes. In 2012, The PowerBall underwent significant changes, including increasing the ticket price, adding more numbers to choose from, and improving the overall odds of winning smaller prizes (albeit making it more difficult to win the jackpot).
The PowerBall holds the record for the largest lottery jackpot ever won in the United States, a staggering $1.586 billion prize shared by three winning tickets in January 2016.
On to the MegaMillions:
The MegaMillions Lottery traces its roots back to 1996 when it was introduced as ‘The Big Game’, with just six participating states. It was renamed ‘MegaMillions’ in 2002.
Like The Powerball, MegaMillions is also operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), although it operates separately from Powerball. The MegaMillions rapidly expanded since its conception, adding more states to its network and increasing its jackpot prizes – often competing with The Powerball for the title of the largest lottery jackpot in the country.
The MegaMillions holds the second-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history, a $1.537 billion prize won by a single ticket in October 2018. In October 2017, The MegaMillions underwent changes to increase the size of its jackpots and improve the overall player experience; including raising ticket prices, and making it easier to win smaller prizes.
Both The Powerball and MegaMillions have become household names in the United States, attracting millions of players with the allure of life-changing jackpots and supporting various state programs through lottery revenue. They continue to be immensely popular and have cemented their status as iconic American lotteries.
But enough about that.
